Overview

Masonry can continue to look solid while water is getting through open mortar joints, cracks, or damaged areas around edges and transitions. Small defects can grow as moisture moves into the wall and repeated weather exposure breaks down the surrounding material.

A proper masonry repair starts with identifying the cause and extent of the damage. RTI Roofing & Tuckpointing provides brick and block repair, mortar-joint repair, crack repair, and masonry restoration. Our services also include chimney repair and rebuilding, chimney tear-downs when necessary, parapet wall repair and rebuilding, and retaining wall repair. Each project is assessed to determine the appropriate repair approach.

Symptoms

When to call

Open or missing mortar joints

Gaps in the mortar leave a direct path for water to enter the wall. If the joints are soft, recessed, or missing in several areas, the damage may extend beyond the one spot that is easiest to see.

Cracks through masonry

Cracks can appear in mortar, brick, block, or other masonry surfaces. Their location and direction help show whether the problem is limited to a joint or whether a larger section needs attention.

Loose or damaged masonry

Loose units, chipped edges, and deteriorated sections can allow more water into the wall and may worsen with seasonal weather. Repairs should address unstable material before it creates a larger opening.

Water entering near a masonry area

Damp spots, staining, or water coming through a masonry wall can result from failed joints, cracks, or a nearby transition. Finding the entry point matters because sealing the visible interior mark does not correct the exterior source.

Our process

How the work goes

  1. Inspect the masonry

The affected area is reviewed for open joints, cracks, loose material, and signs that water is entering. The surrounding masonry is checked as well so the repair is not limited to one symptom.

  2. Plan the repair

The repair approach depends on the condition of the joints and masonry. Areas needing tuckpointing, replacement, or additional preparation are identified before work begins.

  3. Prepare the damaged area

Loose and deteriorated material is removed as needed, and the area is prepared for new mortar or masonry repair. Proper preparation gives the new work a sound surface to bond with.

  4. Complete and check the repair

New mortar or replacement masonry is installed in the affected area, then the completed work is checked for gaps, uneven joints, and remaining signs of damage.

Scope

What the job includes

Masonry work is quoted after reviewing the affected area. The scope depends on the amount of damaged mortar or masonry and the preparation required before repair.

Masonry questions

Answers before you book.

More questions on our full FAQ page.

What is tuckpointing?

Tuckpointing repairs deteriorated mortar joints by removing damaged material and placing new mortar in the joint. It is used when the masonry units are still serviceable but the mortar between them has failed.

Can a small masonry crack be left alone?

A small crack may remain unchanged, but it can also allow water into the masonry and grow with continued weather exposure. An inspection helps determine whether it is a limited joint repair or part of a larger problem.

How do I know if the masonry or the mortar needs repair?

Mortar that is missing, soft, or recessed may point to tuckpointing. Cracked, loose, or badly damaged masonry units may require a different repair. The condition of both should be reviewed before choosing the work.

How much does masonry repair cost?

The work is quoted after the masonry is reviewed. The price depends on the size of the affected area, the type of damage, and whether the repair involves mortar joints, damaged masonry, or both.
